He is People’s Artist of Russia, a winner of Russian State Awards, the founder and artistic director of the Theatre on Pokrovka. (1991-2015),artistic director of the Mayakovsky Moscow Academic Theatre (2002-2011).
He graduated from the Sverdlovsk Drama School and the Direction Department of the Russian Academy of Theatre Arts (1981). Between 1980 and 1989, he was a stage director and actor at the Taganka Theatre.
In 1991, he founded the Russian State Theatre on Porkrovka and was its artistic director. There he staged Chekhov’s Three Sisters, Captured Spirit (a scenic performance based on Marina Tsvetaeva’s works). Turgenev’s A Month in the Country, Gogol’s The Inspector General, Ostrovsky’s Talents and Admirers, Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Bulgakov’s The Cabal of Hypocrites (in collaboration with Théâtre Toursky in France),Quarantine (Boldino Autumn) by Artsybashev and Krymov.
Since 2002 till 2011, he was the artistic director of the Mayakovsky Moscow Academic Theatre, where he produced Gogol’s Marriage, Neil Simon’s The Dinner Party, Dostoevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov, Divorce in a Feminine Way based on Clare Boothe Luce’s play The Women, and Love Through the Eyes of a Detective based on Shaffer’s The Public Eye.
He appeared in a number of films, including A Cruel Romance, A Forgotten Tune for the Flute, Promised Heaven, Shirli-Myrli, 12.
