Maya Shavdatuashvili

Chief Lighting Designer


Graduated from the St. Petersburg Academy of Theatrical Arts (formerly, the Leningrad State Institute of Theatre, Music and Cinema) as a lighting designer in 1993.

Between 1995 and 2004, she worked at the Mariinsky Theatre, recreating the theatre’s classical productions in the Covent Garden Royal Opera House (London),La Scala (Milan),Metropolitan Opera (New York) and some others.

She has cooperated with Russian and foreign theatres, including Lenkom, Et Cetera, the Taganka Theatre, the Novosibirsk Youth Theatre “Globus”, the Omsk Drama Theatre, Barbian in London, New York City Center, and others.

In 2007 to 2015, she was the chief lighting designer in the Evgeny Vakhtangov Theatre.

In 2015, she became a leading expert on creating concepts of new lighting products in Light Technik GmbH.

In 2013, she won the Golden Mask Award in the category “Drama. Lighting Design” for the production Pristan of the Evgeny Vakhtangov Theatre.

In 2019, she was appointed chief lighting designer at the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Academic Musical Theatre.

Since 2021, she has been the chief light designer of the Novaya Opera Theatre.
