Alexey Veiro

Head of the Directors' Group

He graduated from the Russian Academy of Dramatic Arts (RATI-GITIS) as an actor of musical theatre (Professor Georgy Ansimov’s class) and as a drama director (Professor Anatoly Vasiliev’s class). 

He worked as an actor in the Musical End Theatre of Moscow and as a choir artist in Anatoly Vasiliev’s theatre School of Modern Dramatic Art. Alexey taught acting in the Gerasimov All-Russia State Institute of Cinematography. He organized a theatre studio.

In 2004, he was appointed an assistant stage director at the Novaya Opera Theatre, and in this capacity he worked on the following productions: Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, O Mozart! Mozart…, Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Tsar’s Bride, Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov, Bellini’s Norma, Verdi’s Nabucco, Wagner’s Lohengrin, Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi, and Offenbach’s A Dinner Party with Italians (M. Choufleuri restera chez lui le…).

In 2012, Alexey became a stage director of the Novaya Opera. He has directed the productions of Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, Shostakovich’s The Gamblers and Prokofiev’s Maddalena, as well as Verdi’s Aida (in concert) and Glinka’s A Life for a Tsar (in concert),the musical divertissement OperaMania, the concert of Russian choir music Inverted Perspective, the chamber concert programmes Around Wagner, This is Pure BacchusBach’s Birth Anniversary and some others.

In recent years Alexey Veiro has devoted much of his time to work with the Chamber Choir of the Novaya Opera (choirmaster Yulia Senyukova),for which he has directed the productions The Ebony (spirituals music),The Ivory (Renaissance music) and The Red (a choral opera based on Spainish and Ladino songs). They are a triptych studying people that are different.

Alexey Veiro is one of the initiators and organizers of The Different Choral Music Festival, which was first held at the Novaya Opera in 2016.

He directed the productions of Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte and Le nozze di Figaro in Vladivostok in 2009 and 2011 respectively (joint Russian-German projects). He staged the Russian premiere of Pergolesi’s Livietta e Tracollo for the Sheremetiev Seasons in Ostankino in 2010.

In 2013–2015, he was deputy director for artistic matters. Since 2015, he has been Head of the Stage Direction Department.
